Visual artist, illustrator and graphic designer, Hugo Mendes explores in his work themes related to identity and representation, or lack thereof. His practice is inspired by a strong Mozambican tradition of carving crafts and wood carvings (Psikhelekedana and Makonde art), processes through which he creates artworks with Asian millenary woodcut technique, paper printing from wood engravings, acrylic paint. and digital manipulation, or, in some cases, mixing different techniques in a single work.
